Film puts spotlight on hate crimes |
A new film, “Do We Belong,” which tells the story of the hate crime that resulted in the death of Indian American engineer Srinivas Kuchibhotla, has been released online by The Atlantic as part of its “The Atlantic Selects,” a showcase of short films curated by the publication. On Feb. 22, 2017, Kuchibhotla and another Indian American engineer Alok Madasani were at the Austins Bar & Grill in Olathe, Kansas, for a post-work drink, when Adam Purinton walked in and began shooting at them. Kuchibhotla succumbed to his injuries and died that day. Purinton pleaded guilty to three federal hate-crime charges and was sentenced to life in prison. The short documentary, directed by Pakistani American Sofian Khan and produced by Indian American Pulkit Datta, tells the devastating story from the point of view of Kuchibhotla`s wife, Sunayana Dumala.
