Richa Chadha starrer Bollywood political drama MADAM CHIEF MINISTER was released in theatres in India on 22nd January 2021. Based on a strong promotion and hype built up, cine goers and commentators were expecting a cinematic work that tackled both politics and gender and intelligently dealt with the two themes. Adding to the hype was the fact that the film is written and directed by Subhash Kapoor of Jolly LLB fame. Richa Chadha is considered a major star. Howeer, critics have called the film `a disaster, worse than bland, bunk.`. The film touched upon caste and gender issues half-heartedly. Also, it seems full of cliches. The story is unrealistic in that it shows people jousting in unseemly and bizarre ways for political power. The main character is not properly represented in terms of either social identity nor her gender. The film shows the lead character taking over the highest office in India`s largest state and pulling out all kinds of bizzare stops to keep her rivals at bay. It also has too many plots thrown in. Lead character Tara first escapes infanticide and is saved from some goons by a veteran political leader, Master Suraj Bhan played by Saurabh Shukla. She becomes a part of the inner coterie of his party, which works for the uplift of the backward castes. She quickly becomes the old man`s trusted associate.
