Review of film SHAKUNTALA DEVI |
Banking on the success trend of biopics in Bollywood, Vidya Balan starrer SHAKUNTALA DEVI, a biopic based on the life of great Indian mathematician, the human computer Shakuntala Devi was released on the OTT platform Amazon Prime video on Friday. The biopic of the famed `human computer` has been directed by Anu Menon, alongside Vidya. The film also stars Sanya Malhotra, Amit Sadh and Jisshu Sengupta. The film is a happy and warm projection with swirling emotional ups and downs in the personal life of a professionally great personality. The film is both consistently entertaining and emotionally engaging. The film was scheduled for a theatrical release but was released on the OTT platform amidst the Corona pandemic. Vidya Balan is exceptional in her portrayal of the character so complex and yet so lively. Made by an all-woman crew, SHAKUNTALA DEVI is definitely feminist in its essence touching upon the sensitive issue that was so dominantly prevalent at that time. It presents a buoyant, inspiring portrait of a woman who lived life on her own terms, often came close to paying a price for it but never allowed herself to wonder if the choices she made in life were erroneous. The screenplay, written by Menon and Nayanika Mahtani is, as the film states upfront, "based on a true story seen through the eyes of a daughter".
