Review of film SHERNI |
A Bollywood flick that`s different and seeks to show how to make a difference in the world we live in today. That`s SHERNI. The film is about a committed forest officer, who after 6 years of a desk job, is transferred to the forests of Bijapur, where a tigress starts hunting near the village fields. It isn`t the typical old flick about human-animal conflict. SHERNI storyline is modern and a call for action. The film subtly deals with the topic of wildlife and environmental protection. Bollywood actress Vidya Balan plays Vidya Vincent, a committed forest officer. She is sent to the forests of Bijapur with its set of unique challenges. Vidya seems isolated as she is the lone woman in a male-dominated department. Locating and capturing T12 alive is of utmost importance for Vidya. But, this means navigating through the sentiments of the locals, the pressure built by the politicians, her boss` attitude, and the so-called conservationist`s pride in hunting tigers. Her only support is a zoology professor and some of the local villagers. Director Amit Masurkar weaves an intricate and complex narrative with a rich visual texture, as he delves into the otherwise typical man versus animal conflict. The screenplay is meticulously detailed. Vidya Balan gives a remarkable and powerful performance. Vijay Raaz, Brijendra Kala, Neeraj Kabi, Sampa Mandal, Sharat Saxena add with their effortless performances.
