THALAIVII bombs at the box office |
Bollywood superstar Kangana Ranaut playing former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa in the film “Thalaivii” received good reviews prior to release on 10th September in cinemas across India. But, initial box office numbers showed that positive reviews did not produce results. Reportedly, in the first weekend, the film could collect just Rs 30 million in India. Both Hindi and Telugu versions were not liked by the people. Expectedly, the Tamil version did fairly better among all the versions. Directed by AL Vijay, “Thalaivii” the film was well received in Tamil Nadu, the home state of Jayalalithaa. One of the major reasons for the film`s dismal box office start is the lesser screen count since major multiplex chains like PVR Cinemas, INOX Leisure Ltd and Cinepolis refused to screen the Hindi version of the film in North India. “Thalaivii” chronicles the life of late actor and politician J Jayalalithaa. It showcases her journey from being an ace actor to becoming the chief minister of Tamil Nadu state of India for six terms. Besides Kangana, the film also stars Arvind Swamy as actor-turned-politician MGR. Actors Prakash Raj, Bhagyashree and Jisshu Sengupta play other prominent roles in the film.
