Veteran actor Girish Karnad passes away |
A celebrated actor, playwright and filmmaker of India`s golden era of cinema, Girish Karnad passed away at the age of 81 on Monday after a long illness. He died at a hospital in Bengaluru. Born on May 19, 1938 in Mumbai, Girish Karnad was a Rhodes Scholar at the University of Oxford, where he wrote his first play - the critically-acclaimed. His acclaimed plays include "Yayati" in 1961, "Tughlaq" (1964) and "Hayavadana" (1972). Girish Karnad was also a presenter of award-winning TV series - Turning Point on Doordarshan National during the 1990s. The show was based on science and new discoveries. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1974 and the Padma Bhushan in 1992. Considered a famed litterateur, he was also awarded the Jnanpith award in 1998. He was also active in the world of cinema; he made his acting and screenwriting debut in a Kannada movie "Samskara" in 1970 and acted in films for nearly four decades.
