India and Australia have historically had good relations, share the Commonwealth countries platform and have been partners in progress. Australia has wooed Indian immigrants, especially professionals. Starting 2008 and especially during 2009, attacks on Indians in Australia have marred the relations, at least insofar as the people of India are concerned. Relatives are fearful for the young men who seem to be some sort of targets. Dead bodies have been brought back, few severely hurt and one even brain damaged and many others brutally assaulted. The governments of India and Australia are worried and discussing ways to abate this wave of violence that has enveloped the Indian-Australian community. There are various schools of thought. One says the acts are racial. The others feel the young Indian men seeking education today in Australia are different from those in the past and may actually serve to become targets of violence as anywhere in the world. Mindful of the debate and the growing tensions surrounding it, PIO TV requested and was glad to receive an interview discussion with the High Commissioner of Australia in India, Mr. Peter Varghese. Peter is the first High Commissioner of Indian origin and his solid credentials and background perhaps led him to occupy the hot seat he is in. In a wide-ranging interview with PIO TV Managing Editor, Munish Gupta, the Australian High Commissioner talks about the issue center stage in Indo-Australian relations.
