4-year high number of pilgrims at Amarnath |
With special arrangements made at all pilgrim places by the government, pilgrims visiting the Amarnath shrine have surpassed last year`s figure to register a four ¬year high while the twin shrines of Kedarnath and Badrinath have seen a record number this year. The number of pilgrims at Amarnath this year is expected to surpass the record high of around 372,000 which was registered in 2013, while last year`s figure of 285,006 was surpassed on Monday given the huge rush on the auspicious first Monday of Shravan or Sawan, the fifth month of the Hindu calendar. It took just 22 days for last year`s pilgrim count achieved over 60 days to be surpassed. The Amarnath yatra is scheduled to continue till August 15. The weather has been good so far and excellent arrangements made this time are bringing in lots of pilgrims. At both Amarnath and Kedarnath, special efforts have been made to improve the pedestrian track, provide resting points on the way and install protective railings to save pilgrims from landslides and falling rocks. Increased helicopter services at both shrines have also brought in more pilgrims this year. A mobile app was also launched for Amarnath pilgrims, with a special feature of SOS call alert system and the live tracking of yatris.
