5 dead in West Bengal Assembly elections |
At least 5 persons were killed by gunfire in election related violence as one of the most heated Assembly elections closed the 8th and final phase of voting in the eastern Indian State of West Bengal. Otherwise, heavy polling was witnessed on 29th April for polls to 35 Assembly seats in four districts, with 283 candidates in the fray and among them 35 women. The national ruling party BJP and the state ruling party Trinamool Congress are contesting all seats. Congress is contesting 19 seats under the banner of Sanyukta Morcha, a coalition between Congress, Left, and the Indian Secular Front (ISF). CPI(M) is contesting 10 seats and ISF four. This brings the curtain down on a month-long poll season with a high-stakes political battle between the BJP and the TMC overshadowed by the surge in Covid-19 infections in the state. Counting of votes is on May 2.
