Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 25th April ordered setting up of 551 oxygen plants inside government hospitals across the country. They will be funded from the PM CARES Fund. Modi asked the plants be made functional as soon as possible. The Prime Minister`s Office (PMO) said that the PM CARES Fund has approved the allocation for the installation of 551 dedicated Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) Medical Oxygen Generation Plants. The plants will be established in identified government hospitals in district headquarters in various States and Union Territories. The PMO also said that such an in-house captive oxygen generation facility will address the day-to-day medical oxygen needs of these hospitals and the district. The PMO added that the liquid medical oxygen (LMO) will serve as a “top-up” to the captive oxygen generation. Such a system will go a long way in ensuring that government hospitals in the districts do not face sudden disruption of oxygen supply and have access to adequate uninterrupted to manage the COVID-19 and other patients. The Modi government has also directed the States and Union Territories to ensure that liquid oxygen is exclusively used for Medical Purposes only. The exception to nine other industries has also been withdrawn in order to enhance the availability of Medical Oxygen in the country.
