AAP sweeps Delhi state elections, route BJP |
The Arvind Kejriwal led Aam Aadmi Party has come back to power in Delhi for the third term, winning Assembly elections with a thumping majority of 62 out of 70 assembly seats. This is for the second time that the party has swept the election-winning more than two-third of the seats. In 2015 the party had won 67 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party was able to win only 8 seats from the state from where it had won 7 out of 7 seats in the last years General elections for the Parliament. In the last assembly polls, the BJP had won 3 seats. BJP president JP Nadda said that his party accepts the mandate given by the people of Delhi and it will play the role of a constructive opposition. Congress was nowhere in the reckoning as it could not open the account for the second time in a row. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Aam Aadmi Party and Arvind Kejriwal for the victory in the Delhi Assembly Elections. In a tweet, Modi wished them the very best in fulfilling the aspirations of the people of Delhi. CPI-M General Secretary, Sitaram Yechury also congratulated Aam Aadmi Party and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for his victory. He said the people`s mandate is a befitting reply to BJP`s divisive agenda.
