Article 370 of Indian Constitution revoked |
In the latest development on the Jammu & Kashmir issue, Union Home Minister Amit Shah informed the Parliament`s Upper House Rajya Sabha that the cabinet meeting held at Prime Minister Narendra Modi`s house has decided that Article 370, which gives special status to the state of Jammu & Kashmir, will be revoked. Furthermore, Jammu & Kashmir will now be a Union Territory with legislature while Ladakh region will form another separate Union territory without legislature. At the start of the session, Opposition`s Ghulam Nabi Azad questioned the government saying, “Entire valley is under curfew, political leaders including three former chief ministers are under house arrest. There is a war like situation in the state, so this should be discussed on priority." In Jammu and Kashmir, the government which is under the President`s rule, had imposed restrictions under Section 144 of the CrPC in Srinagar and some other districts with effect from midnight on Sunday. According to an order, there shall be no movement of public and all educational institutions in Srinagar district shall remain closed. The order said, identity cards of essential services officials will be treated as movement passes wherever required. It stated that there is a complete bar on holding any kind of public meeting or rally.
