Ayodhya case now to be heard on Jan 29 |
After a week long wait for all the interested parties, the Supreme Court was to start the hearing of Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid title case on Thursday. But in a sudden turn of events, the Supreme Court was adjourned today after the exit of one of the five judges in the constitution bench. Justice UU Lalit. He recused himself saying he had been a lawyer in a related case. The Supreme Court will now take up the temple-mosque case on January 29. The bench led by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi will then decide on a schedule and the frequency of hearings in the decades-old title dispute. The other judges on the Constitution Bench are Justice SA Bobde, Justice NV Ramana and Justice DY Chandrachud. The Supreme Court was originally supposed to hear the case in October, but deferred this to January, rejecting the Uttar Pradesh government`s plea for speedy hearings with CJI Gogoi saying the court had its “own priorities”. The ruling Bhartiya Janata Party is under pressure to build the Ram temple there, but Prime minister Narendra Modi has said that the Ram temple can not be made unless the judicial process is over.
