BJP tops Karnataka polls, struggles to form Govt. |
Prime Minister Narendra Modi led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) snatched the south Indian state of Karnataka back from the lead opposition party, Congress, but remained shy of a majority to form government in the state known as the Silicon Valley of India. BJP as the single largest party scrambled to try any strategy to collect signatures from 123 Members of Legislative Assembly. BJP staked claim with the Governor of the State to form the government, and so did the third largest party JD (S) of erstwhile Prime Minister H D Dewe Gowda run by his son H D Kumaraswamy. Congress, in the second position, moved swiftly to extend support to the third largest JD(S) party. At the BJP headquarters in Delhi, Modi called the Karnataka results an unparalleled and unprecedented win and assured the people of Karnataka that the BJP will not allow the state`s development journey to be trampled upon. Analysts say Congress picked up a larger percentage of votes but lost seats. Congress is said to have done well in urban areas, but BJP raked up sentiments and votes from the rural masses. BJP mood is somewhat sombre B S as Yeddyurappa, its chief ministerial candidate, cancelled his trip to New Delhi. BJP won 104 seats, Congress 78, JD (S) 38 and others 2 of the 222 seats contested in the 224-member Assembly and 2 seats will be contested later.
