BJP wins 12 of 15 seats Karnataka state by-polls |
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party of Indian state of Karnataka swept the assembly by-polls on Monday, winning 12 of the total 15 seats. Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa`s government formed with a narrow majority needed only seven seats for a majority but won five extra at the cost of the opposition parties Congress and JDS. With this win, BJP`s tally stands at 118 including the support of one independent MLA. In a huge setback, the Congress could win only two out of 15 seats whereas it had previously held 12 of them. Expelled from the BJP ahead of the December 5 bypolls, rebel Sharath Bachegowda won as an independent from Hosakote assembly segment against the BJP`s MTB Nagaraj. Union Home Minister Amit Shah greeted BS Yeddiyurappa for the saffron party`s stellar performance in the bypolls. He assured that the ruling BJP will continue to transform the southern state under Prime Minister Narendra Modi`s guidance. Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked the people of Karnataka for placing faith in the saffron party. He said in a tweet, "Karnataka has voted for development and punished opportunism.” The result will help the four-month-old Yediyurappa government retain majority. 11 out of 12 winning candidates will be made ministers. Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa said, the government will be stable for the next three years and will concentrate and come up with good development orientated work."
