Ban ki-Moon calls for global governance system to fight Covid-19 |
Former UN Secretary General Ban ki-Moon on Thursday called for inter-linking the global health scenario and climate change issues in the COVID-19 situation and suggested a global governance system to handle such emergencies. Participating in a webinar organised by the Foreign Correspondents Club South Aisa in New Delhi, Ban Ki Moon reflected on the post-COVID situation, and stressed the need for working together in such health crises. He suggested that an International Governance System for global crisis response must be in place so that such problems can be handled better. Temporary lock downs could not be the ultimate solution to such situations, and unified efforts were required to contain the global health crisis. Lauding India`s role in UN Peacekeeping operations all over the world, the former UN Secretary General said the UN has been sending peacekeepers since beginning and thousands of Indian troops had served in more than 71 UN missions. Interacting with Munish Gupta, PIO TV Managing Editor who is also Secretary of Foreign Correspondents Club of South Asia, Ban ki-Moon said the United Nations structure in terms of representation needed to change with current realities and India should play a significant role. Not directly but the former United Nations Secretary General who served for 10 years until 2016 indicated his support for India as a permanent member of the security council. Ban ki-Moon stressed the need for reshaping international cooperation, avoiding trade barriers and ensuring financial safety nets for developing countries. He added that chaotic times require everyone to come forward and take the lead. The United Nations has always dealt with regional conflict zones and issues of climate change.
