Bangladesh special okay to India to export Hilsa fish |
One of the most famous Bengali delicacies is the fish and Hilsa fish comes above most on the list. Natives of West Bengal are even willing to pay high prices for the fish believed to be of superior quality in taste. Nearly 1,450 tonnes of hilsa fish, a quintessential Bengali favorite, is all set to enter India from Bangladesh next week. Bangladesh has given special permission to its traders for export. Bangladesh had banned exports of hilsa fish in 2012 and now it has issued special permission to export the fish. The Commerce Ministry of Bangladesh has given special permission for traders to export Hilsa fish to India on a limited scale in view of the forthcoming Durga Puja. Last year also export of 500 tonnes of Hilsa to India was permitted by the government around the time of Durga Puja. The special permission was signed on the 10th of September as nearly 200 fish exporters from Bangladesh had sought permission from the government to export the fish to India. Out of them, only nine have been given permission. The entire quantity will land in Kolkata by next week. It will enter West Bengal through the Benapole-Petrapole border. The export will be allowed until October 10. The hilsa that will come from Bangladesh will vary between 800 and 1,200 grams. The wholesale rate of hilsa will be around Rs 800-1,400 per kg depending upon the size.
