Biden urged to ease curbs on H-1B visa |
Millions of Indians working for American companies are distressed by the restrictions posed by the outgoing Trump administration on issuance of new H-1B visas and other visas for foreign workers. On the issue of H-1B a top India-centric American business advocacy group has urged the incoming Biden administration to ease the restrictions on H-1B visas and provide green cards to higher education students with science and mathematics degrees to meet the increasing demand for IT professionals in USA. On 31st of December, outgoing US President Donald Trump extended a freeze on the most sought-after H-1B visas along with other types of foreign work visas by three months to 31st of March, affecting a large number of Indian IT professionals who were issued visas in October 2020 by the US government for the fiscal year 2021. President-elect Joe Biden, a Democrat, has promised to lift the suspension on H-1B visas, saying Trump`s immigration policies are cruel. Mukesh Aghi, president of US-India Strategic and Partnership Forum has said that curbs and removing them were a legislative issue. The Forum has recommended to the Biden administration to, one, ease up the H-1B (visa), and also that every science, technology, engineering and mathematics PhD graduate, should be offered a Green Card, so they stay and become as a taxpayer and support growth of the economy. He was hopeful of this sentiment resonating with the Biden administration. Joe Biden is scheduled to be inaugurated as the 46th US President on 20th of January.
