Bishen Bedi gives free spectacles to underprivileged children |
Indian cricket legend Bishan Singh Bedi on 20 August 2018 launched the One Bright Vision Child Eye Health program for India Vision Institute(IVI) to screen and give spectacles to 4,500 children from less privileged backgrounds in Delhi with the support of CooperVision in India. 27 children from Government Boys School, Pandara Park, received free spectacles; 314 were screened in the current Delhi campaign. Known for spin bowling prowess, Bedi played for India from 1966 to 1979 as part of the Indian spin quartet. He captained the Test team in 1976. Vision is as much critical in children`s education as it is in the playing fields, said Bedi. IVI CEO Vinod Daniel said corrected vision through spectacles helps children can become active members of the community and do well in life. Eighty percent of what a child learns is through visual processing. CooperVision, IVI has screened over 53,480 disadvantaged school children across India with 4,355 children provided free spectacles. Among dignitaries were Arnab Sarkar, Director, CooperVision India, and Munish Gupta, Chairman & Managing Editor of PIO TV. IVI has conducted 357 screenings of 160,685 individuals (including 117,706 children) with free spectacles for 18,227 individuals (including 9,509 children).
