California Board upholds Hindu cause |
The battle over the representation of India and Indian Americans in California`s elementary school textbooks continued, as the California Board of Education voted to retain the changes asked for by the Hindu American Foundation. Seen in California a group outside the California state capitol building in Sacramento protests the allegedly inaccurate portrayal of Hinduism and Indian culture in elementary school textbooks. The textbooks show all cultures in a positive way, but sadly only Hinduism and India are singled out and shown with pictures of trash, slums and poverty. An opposing group, known as South Asian Histories For All, noted that the changes proposed by HAF largely erase the representation of Dalits, Sikhs, and other Indian minorities. The Hindu American Foundation and the Hindu Education Foundation declared victory as the California Board of Education upheld several changes to the state`s elementary school textbooks proposed by the organization.
