China echoes India call for restraint on Myanmar |
A week after India called for restraint in Myanmar, China has followed suit and issued a similar statement. However, China without naming the USA warned against external interference in Myanmar. After meeting his counterparts from South East Asia, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told media, “We call on all parties in Myanmar to exercise the utmost restraint to stop violence and prevent another bloody conflict that aggravates civilian casualties. We all urge all parties in Myanmar to seek political understanding through dialogue within the constitution and legal framework as soon as possible.”. Wang said China would continue to maintain contact and communication with all parties in Myanmar. Last week at a closed-door meet of the UN Security Council, India called for restraint and deplored violence and lots of deaths. India views that the military junta needs to be engaged for a durable solution to the crisis amid prevailing geopolitics and to prevent pushing the current regime towards Beijing. Wrapping up his week-long series of meetings with his counterparts from Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines in Fujian, Wang said efforts should be made to stop tensions escalating in Myanmar. Wang told the Chinese media, “We are aware that we have to be alert to some external forces infiltrating Myanmar with ulterior motives, provoking trouble and intensifying divisions, which makes the situation more complicated,”. Wang`s warning over external interference in Myanmar comes as Chinese officials faced sanctions from the USA, the UK, Canada and the EU over human rights abuses in the Xinjiang province. The USA has suspended all engagement with Myanmar under a 2013 trade and investment agreement until the return of a democratically elected government there.
