Cold spell envelopes North India |
North India reeled under cold conditions as the temperature continued to dip across states. India`s national capital, New Delhi suffered its eighth straight day of intense `cold day` conditions on Monday, when the maximum temperature was 9.7°C. According to records, this is set to be Delhi`s longest and severest `cold day` spell in December in 22 years. The last time Delhi witnessed a similarly long daytime cold spell in December was in 2014, when again eight consecutive `cold days` were recorded. But not only is the current spell harsher, it`s set to last longer with the Met office forecasting a deepening chill in the next five-six days. Monday was the fifth `severe cold day` during this spell; the 2014 spell had only two `severe cold days`. The severe cold spell has come before the peak winter period of December 25 to January 15. The weather in the region turned severe after the spell of heavy snowfall in the hills on December 12-13. Since then, icy north-north westerly winds have been blowing. According to the met department, dense fog is expected in the early hours till December 28.
