Committee to study Agri laws, India Apex Court halts implementation |
The Supreme Court of India on 11th January expressed its extreme disappointment with the way the Central Government has handled the farmers` agitation going on for more than a month. After listening to farmers` lawyer and the government attorney, the Apex Court said that it will constitute a committee of experts, including from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, to examine the new Agri laws. The Chief Justice of India, SA Bobde said "All can give a response to the Committee, both for and against. We will accept the Committee report and deal with the farm laws.”. Criticising the Central Government over the handling of farmers protests, the Bench headed by the Chief Justice said "What is going on? States are rebelling against your laws. The matter is getting worse, suicides are taking place. Are you taking care of their food health and other issues.”. But the Apex Court also threw in a word of caution to protesting farmers who want nothing short of repeal of laws, as the Court told farmer unions “Whether you have faith or not, we are the Supreme Court of India, we will do our job.”. The SC said the peaceful protests can go awry because of any stray incident adding “All of us have a heavy responsibility to ensure things don`t go wrong.”. When the Centre opposed SC`s intention to stay implementation of farm laws, the CJI said “The government has not been able to solve the problem. It must take responsibility. As its laws led to strike, it must solve it. Now farmers will tell the Committee their views.”.
