Congress dissidents in Punjab unwilling to relent |
A panel of top leaders of the Indian National Congress Party mediating a dispute between the Chief Minister of Punjab and party dissidents have not been successful. The panel recommended that the Chief Minister retain the post. Dissident party leaders led by former Cricketer and legislator Navjot Singh Siddhu are unwilling to relent in their opposition to Chief Minister Amarinder Singh. Dissidents held meetings on 10th June to plan their future course of action. Dissident leaders said that the CM hasn`t fulfilled poll promises, and they were now trying to convince more legislators to join their call for a change in leadership, and nothing less. They denied that dissent stemmed from the Chief Minister and Siddhu not getting along. For now, the mediating panel of the Congress party will meet Congress president Sonia Gandhi soon. Dissident leaders hope they will be asked to join the meeting, or at least their issues taken on board by the top brass before a final decision. Legislator Pargat Singh has dared the Chief Minister to make public the dossiers on “wrongdoings” of ministers and MLAs that he has reportedly given to the panel. Pargat said such dossiers pointed to “corruption in the government” and failure to take action against the legislators concerned. Amarinder Singh claims he has been transparent.
