Congress forges `grand alliance` against BJP in Assam |
Battle lines are drawn between the BJP party of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and 5 other political parties led by the Indian National Congress for elections in the northeast state of Assam in India. An official announcement was made on 19th January by BJP`s opposition as elections in Assam are likely to be held in March – April. The 5 partners of Congress are CPI, CPI(M), CPI(ML), AIUDF and Anchalik Gana Morcha (AGM). Assam Congress President Ripun Bora told the Press in Guwahati “We, the Congress decided to invite all like-minded parties to oust the communal forces for the best interest of the country.”. Chhattisgarh Chief Minister and senior party leader Bhupesh Baghel was also present at the event. Bora said that leaders of all five parties held discussions with Baghel and Congress party general secretaries Mukul Wasnik and Jitendra Singh. Bora made it clear that the 5 parties admit they must fight together to oust the BJP. He also said they will keep doors open to invite the other regional parties of Assam and other anti-BJP parties to join the alliance. Two important regional parties, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) and Raijor Dal, which were formed after the massive anti-CAA movement that had swept the state in 2019-20 are in talks for an alliance. AJP has the backing of influential student bodies — All Assam Students` Union (AASU) and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP).
