Cyclone Fani May wreak havoc in Odisha |
More than 100 million people are in the potential path of the life-threatening tropical cyclone Fani as it tracks over the Bay of Bengal. Fani is currently an extremely severe cyclonic storm with winds equal to a Category 3 hurricane in the Atlantic or East Pacific oceans. Fani is expected to make landfall near Puri on Friday with wind speeds ranging up to 180 kilometres per hour. The storm is likely to impact coastal districts of Odisha. Under the influence of the Cyclone, squally winds gusting up to 85 km per hour are expected on Thursday night along and off the North Andhra Pradesh Coast.The Indian Coast Guard and the Navy have deployed ships and helicopters for relief and rescue operations. Army and Air Force units in the three States have also been put on standby. 880 cyclone shelters in coastal and southern districts have been kept ready to accommodate the evacuees. One lakh dry food packets are being kept ready at different places.As Fani tracks inland Friday night into Saturday it will weaken, lowering the risk for damaging winds across Jharkhand, Bihar and West Bengal; however, locally damaging winds and flooding rainfall will still be possible.
