DMK Stalin proposed Rahul Gandhi`s name as opposition`s PM face. |
The Opposition parties of India, which are trying to forge a united front against the Narendra Modi government during 2019 Lok Sabha elections, were taken by surprise when Tamil Nadu`s major political party DMK`s chief MK Stalin proposed that Congress president Rahul Gandhi should be the opposition front`s prime ministerial candidate for next year`s lok sabha polls. The Congress President Rahul Gandhi and United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi were in Chennai on Sunday for the unveiling of a statue of DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi, who died in August this year. At the political meeting later, attended by several opposition leaders, DMK leader emphasized that to defeat the fascist Modi government, let`s strengthen Rahul Gandhi`s hands and save the country. Opposition parties, including the Congress, have so far carefully avoided the issue of a face for the prime minister`s post to avoid bickering among them. Congress triumph over the BJP in three Hindi heartland states has given the party a key position in the opposition camp, where regional players, like Mamata Banerjee, Mayawati and Chandrababu Naidu have also been pitching for a bigger role. Observers say such announcement may serve a blow to the opposition party`s unity and it will benefit he the ruling NDA.
