Delhi lockdown, week-long curfew starts 19 April |
The Delhi government announced a complete curfew from the night of 19th April to 26th April morning due to a record rise in COVID-19 cases. This was announced following an emergency meeting held by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal with Lieutenant General Anil Baijal. All private offices will `Work From Home` and only government offices. However, essential services and government will be exempted from the restrictions. Kejriwal has been making media announcements daily for the past weekend since he announced a curfew from Friday 16th April night until 19th April morning. This was an effort to curb a worrying surge in Covid-19 cases in Delhi. While the curfew worked, the numbers have become scary. In the last few days, as high as 30% are testing positive. Kejriwal said he felt there were less than 100 ICU beds available in hospitals in the capital. Delhi on April 18th recorded the biggest jump in its daily Covid-19 tally with 25,462 fresh cases, and 161 people died due to the disease in the last 24 hours. Around 20,159 people have recovered from the infection. There are a total of 74,941 active cases in the national capital and the death toll jumped to 12,121. Kejriwal has also written to Union Minister Piyush Goyal saying that oxygen meant for Delhi is being diverted to other states. The Delhi Chief Minister in his media remarks thanked the Union Health Minister and Union Home Minister for assuring him full support. Special COVID-19 hospitals are being set up on a war footing in Delhi and other states with major COVID-19 infections.
