IPL 2021 suspended as players get COVID-19 |
COVID-19 infections creates a crisis finally in the biggest Indian cricket tournament, the Indian Premier League (IPL), as BCCI confirmed that the 2021 edition is suspended after players from various teams were reported Covid positive in its bio bubble. Talking to reporters, BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla said, “All the office bearers and council members have together decided after talking to all stakeholders including the franchises and broadcasters that for now it should be suspended. After a while we will take a call when it will be resumed. Yes, few players in Kolkata and Chennai (have tested positive). Not many players affected. All precautions have been taken but still keeping in mind the health of players and support staff we have taken the decision. We will keep an eye on the situation.there`s a possibility for the season to resume if situation improves”. Earlier, BCCI had confirmed that the May 3rd game between Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan`s Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bangalore was postponed after KKR`s Varun Chakravarthy and Sandeep Warrier tested positive for COVID-19. The BCCI in a statement said, "All other team members have tested negative for COVID -19,". Both the players and the support staff are set to stay in isolation for a period of seven days to complete the bio-secure protocols before they can get back onto the field. Meanwhile, Chennai Super Kings led by former Indian team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni also had two non playing members who tested positive.
