India Prez gives consent to Citizenship Amendment Bill |
Indian President Ram Nath Kovind on Thursday gave his assent to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019, turning it into an Act. According to an official notification, the Act comes into effect with its publication in the official gazette on Thursday. The Act makes illegal migrants of six communities - Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan till December 31, 2014 eligible for Indian citizenship. The amendment is not applicable to the tribal areas of Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram or Tripura as included in the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution and in the areas covered under the Inner Line Permit. The Inner Line Permit regime is applicable in Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Mizoram. As the state of Assam is in a clampdown, thousands of people converged at the heart of the city on Thursday to take part in protests by All Assam Students Union, which is spearheading the protests against the contentious Citizenship Amendment Bill. Two people, protesting against the Bill, died of bullet injuries at Guwahati Medical College and Hospital. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, tried sending a message to the people of Assam, who have been protesting against his government`s decision to include the state in the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.
