India celebrates Eid |
Eid Ul Fitr, which marks the culmination of the holy month of Ramadan, is being celebrated across India on Wednesday. The Ruyat-e-Hilal or Moon Sighting Committees announced the sighting of the moon in various parts of the country on Tuesday evening. The festival is celebrated on the first day of Shawwal, the 10th month of Islamic lunar calendar. The faithful followers of the religion offered Eid prayers in various mosques. President Ram Nath Kovind and Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu have greeted people on the occasion. In his message, Mr Kovind said that marking the culmination of the holy month of Ramzan, this festival strengthens our belief in charity, fraternity and compassion. He said, on this day, we should re-dedicate ourselves to these eternal values that characterise our civilization. In a message, the Vice President said, the essence of the festival lies in the sharing of love and joy with each other. In the national capital, main Eid congregations are being held at Jama Masjid, Fatehpuri Masjid and Eidgah. Elaborate security arrangements have been made on the occasion.
