India celebrates National Unity Day |
National Unity Day is being observed across India on Thursday, on the occasion of the 144th birth anniversary of the Iron Man of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Since 2014, October 31st is observed as the National Unity Day and people from all walks of life participate in the `Run For Unity`. Home Minister Amit Shah flagged off Run For Unity from New Delhi`s Major Dhyanchand National Stadium in the morning after administering a Unity Pledge to the participants. Around 15,000 people participated in the event. Union Ministers, Sportspersons attended the event among others. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Shah said, Sardar Patel always worked for the Unity of India. He worked tirelessly until over 550 princely states were united with the Indian Union. Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the `Statue of Unity` at Kevadiya in Gujarat to pay tributes to Sardar Patel. Later, he witnessed the `Rashtriya Ekta Diwas Parade` by personnel of Gujarat Police and central armed forces. In a tweet in the morning, PM Modi said, Sardar Patel`s contribution to the nation is monumental. The programme was announced by the Prime Minister on October 31, 2015 on the 140th birth anniversary of Sardar Patel.
