India gets its first Lokpal |
The country got its first Lokpal on Saturday when President Ram Nath Kovind administered the oath to Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose at a ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. President Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday administered the oath of office to Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose as the very first Lokpal of India. The oath was administered at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, according to an official statement. Justice Ghose retired as a Supreme Court judge was serving as the member of the National Human Rights Commission when his name was announced for the post of Lokpal chairperson. The Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, which envisages the appointment of a Lokpal at the Centre and Lokayuktas in States to look into cases of corruption against certain categories of public servants. The chairperson and members shall hold office for a term of five years or till they reach 70 years of age. The bill was passed in 2013 and ever since the demand for the appointment of the Lokpal was heard from the power corridors.
