Indian Minister of State (MoS) for External Affairs V Muraleedharan on September 18 inaugurated the first Girmitiya Conference (virtual) organized by the India Foundation with the support of the Overseas Indian Affairs Division of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). V Muraleedharan had also invited the Indian diaspora to be an integral part of `Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav` in their countries of residence. The MoS said that the Indian diaspora has been a proud torchbearer of Indian culture & traditions. He also insisted that it has been instrumental in assimilating the Indian culture to various nations all over the world. He said that the Girmitya Conference would entail more linkages with the Indian Diaspora and result in a beneficial relationship between India and the respective Girmitya countries including political, economic, and people-to-people ties. Indian Diaspora forms a substantial percentage of the population among the Girmitya countries and this can be channelized to form a concrete relationship in various fields especially in promoting better and vibrant economic and trade relations, scientific exchanges, and assisting in the development of each other. The conference, which was organized in collaboration with the India Foundation on "Changing Identities, Shifting Trends and Roles”, will trace the history of Girmit Diaspora, its evolution, and contemporary relevance and importance to the country of their residence as well as to India.
