India marks 1 year, 1.5 billion COVID vaccine jabs |
Marking the anniversary of the biggest COVID-19 vaccine drive started by India exactly a year ago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 16 said it saved millions of lives and protected livelihood. Modi lauded Indian scientists, both government and private sector, for developing vaccines. Modi took to Twitter and put out a series of messages, hailing each and every person associated with the vaccine drive. He asserted that India`s approach to fighting the pandemic will always be science-
based. He talked about how the Indian health infrastructure was augmented to ensure that fellow citizens get the proper care. He asked people to follow all Covid-19 related protocols. Vaccination of frontline workers started on February 2, 2021. The next phase of the Covid-19 vaccination commenced from March 1 for people over 60 years of age and those aged 45 and above with specified co-morbid conditions. Vaccination of all people aged over 45 had begun on April 1. The government then expanded the ambit of the inoculation drive and allowed everyone above 18 be vaccinated from May 1. The next phase of Covid-19 vaccination commenced from January 3, 2022 for adolescents in the age group of 15-18 years. The health ministry has claimed that India`s vaccination program has been one of the most successful and the largest inoculation programs.
