India raises jail term for graft |
India has taken a big anti-corruption move by proposing to treat graft as heinous crime. Now, jail terms are enchanced for bribe takers and bribe givers from the existing five to seven years and minimum from six months to three years, besides fixing a two-year timeframe for completing trial in corruption cases. Offering and accepting non-monetary gratification will be treated as bribery, in a major overhaul aimed at curbing a practice where corporates have used a diverse range of inducements — from paying for hospitality and education of children overseas to sexual favors — to influence decisions. Private bribe givers are currently out of the purview of the Prevention of Corruption Act (PC Act)
