India remembers Shastri |
On Wednesday, India is also celebrating the 115th Birth Anniversary of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. Indian President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Vijay Ghat, the samadhi of Shastriji in the national capital New Delhi and offered floral tributes. Shastri was impressed and influenced by Mahatma Gandhi`s ideology and became one of his loyal followers. In 1920, Shastri joined the fight for India`s freedom struggle. As a politician and later, as an accomplished policymaker and skilled administrator, he left an indelible mark not only on the country but also on the global scene. He laid the foundation of modern India after Independence. While discharging various roles in the government, he rose from a minister in the cabinet of Jawaharlal Nehru to become the Prime Minister, which in terms of the time span was very short, but highly eventful. It was under his able leadership that India won the 1965 war against Pakistan. He gave the nation the powerful slogan of Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan to enthuse soldiers and farmers.
