India rising as exporter of organic veggies, millets |
Indian state of Uttarakhand exported its first consignment of vegetables to UAE on 26th July. The vegetables, sourced from farmers of Haridwar, include curry leaf, okra, pear, and bitter gourd. India is fast making a mark as a vegetable exporter. In May 2021, Uttarakhand shipped a consignment of millets to Denmark. Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) is collaborating with Uttarakhand Agriculture Produce Marketing Boards, and a local organic produce exporter, Just Organik. The state government supports organic farming and UKAPMB, through a unique initiative, works with thousands of farmers for organic certification. These farmers produce mainly millets such as finger millet, barnyard millet, amaranthus etc. APEDA plans to provide financial assistance to set up a packaging house in Uttarakhand to meet the mandatory requirements for export of fresh fruits and vegetables to the international market. India`s Commerce Ministry says APEDA would continue to focus on the Uttarakhand region both in terms of capacity building, quality upgradation, and infrastructure development. APEDA will also link buyers to farmers through strengthening the entire supply chain of agricultural produce. According to a World Trade Organization (WTO) report on the trends in world agricultural trade in the past 25 years, India broke into the top 10 list of agricultural produce exporters in 2019 with a sizeable share in the export of rice, cotton, soya beans and meat.
