India sets agenda for G20 as incoming President |
Ahead of India assuming the Presidency of the G20, Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said that New Delhi will work with the influential group`s other members to address serious issues of debt, food and energy security, and the environment. The G20 is an intergovernmental forum of the world`s major developed and developing economies. India will assume the Presidency of the G20 for one year from December 1, 2022, to November 30, 2023. Under its Presidency, India is expected to host over 200 meetings of the G20 across the country, beginning in December 2022. The G20 Leaders` Summit at the level of Heads of State/Government is scheduled to be held on September 9-10, 2023 in New Delhi. Jaishankar told the high level UN General Assembly session on September 24 "As we begin the G20 presidency this December, we are sensitive to the challenges faced by developing countries”. The reform of the governance of multilateral financial institutions will continue to be one of our core priorities, he said. The G20 comprises 19 countries (Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the UK, the USA, and the EU. Collectively, the G20 accounts for 85 percent of global GDP, 75 percent of international trade, and two-thirds of the world population, making it the premier forum for international economic cooperation.
