India to regulate Artificial Reproductive Technology |
Indian Cabinet on Wednesday approved the historic Assisted Reproductive Technology Regulation Bill 2020 that seeks to regulate the Assisted Reproductive Technology services in the country and provide infertile couples with ethical practices in Assisted reproductive technology. Women and Child Minister Smriti Irani briefed reporters after the Cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She said that the ATP Bill and the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Bills were "most progressive" Bills, giving women reproductive rights. The move comes close on the heels of the introduction in Parliament of the Surrogacy Regulation Bill 2020, and the approval of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Amendment Bill 2020, all path-breaking measures to protect women`s reproductive rights. The ART Regulation Bill 2020 is the most recent, in a series of legislations approved by the Union Cabinet to protect and safeguard the reproductive rights of women. The bill makes provisions for safe and ethical practice of assisted reproductive technology services in the country. India has become one of the major centres of this global fertility industry, with reproductive medical tourism becoming a significant activity.
