India vows to end single use plastic |
After Prime Minister Narendra Modi`s call for reducing the usage of single use plastic, Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan has asked manufacturers of packaged drinking water, like Pepsi and Coca Cola, to come up with alternative packaging in the next 2 days. Mr Paswan on Monday held a meeting with bottled water industry and various government departments in New Delhi to find a suitable alternative for single-use plastic bottles for drinking water. Talking to reporters, Mr Paswan said, an inter-ministerial committee, under the chairmanship of Cabinet Secretary, has been formed to look into the issue of banning single use plastic. He said, plastic is damaging the environment as well as health of human beings and animals. Stating that recycling is not a permanent solution, Mr Paswan said there is a need to find an alternative, which is equally affordable and reliable. He said, the ban will not affect employment as the alternative will create jobs. Railway ministry which manufactures and sell packaged drinking water under `Rail Neer` brand is also looking for alternatives including ing polymers to make the bottle biodegradable.
