Indian Aviation slips to 4th in world |
Suddenly after the grounding of the Jet`s fleet the domestic airfare registered a steep rise, discouraging the fliers to either postpone or reschedule their itineraries. Adding to the draught the grounding of the SpiceJet`s Boeing 737 Max alongside the overall economic slowdown in India has resulted in slipping from being the world`s fastest growing domestic air travel market globally to the fourth spot now. India now stand behind Russia, US and Japan the top three growing markets now, according to the International Air Transport Association, IATA. As per the figures March saw only 3.1% more domestic air travellers in India than same month last year. In the same period, domestic air travel grew by 14.2% in Russia, 6.3% in US and 4.2% in Japan. The slowdown largely reflects the reduction in flight operations of Jet Airways -- which stopped flying in April,” IATA said in a statement. This is perhaps the sharpest fall in growth witnessed by a major market. India had seen 52 straight months of double digit growth. December 2018 was the last month of double digit growth when India had 1.3 crore domestic passengers, up 12.9% from December 2018.
