Indian Govt proposes power tariff bill to empower consumers |
India`s Union Power Minister RK Singh has said that the Modi government will soon bring a new power tariff policy with a focus on empowering the consumers. Talking to reporters in Hyderabad, he said, the new power tariff policy is a path-breaking one as the government is laying down for the first time in the power sector, a Bill of Rights of Consumers. Mr Singh said, the rights include 24X7 power supply to consumers and in case of any load shedding, penalty will be levied on distribution companies and credited into consumers account. He said, if there is any disruption in supply, it has to be attended within a certain time-frame which would be laid down by the regulator. The minister said, the discoms cannot pass on the burden of their inefficiency on the consumers. He said, every single rural household will have electricity and cooking gas connection. Mr Singh said 1.95 crore houses will be provided to eligible beneficiaries under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana - Gramin by the year 2022.
