Indian Parliament budget session disrupted |
The second leg of Union Budget 2023 commenced on March 13 in New Delhi, after the first half was marred by a series of disruptions over a number of issues with Hindenburg report and Adani Group issue being the focal point. Centre`s top-most priority in this session is to pass the Finance Bill along with a number of other pending bills. A total of 26 Bills in Rajya Sabha and 9 bills in Lok Sabha are pending. Most of the second half will be spent on discussing demands for grants to ministries including Panchayati Raj, Tourism, Railways, Health and Culture. The first half of the budget session used 84% of its allotted time in the Lok Sabha and just 56% in the Rajya Sabha. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge convened an urgent meeting of the Opposition leaders on March 14, a day after Parliamentary proceedings were adjourned amid the ruckus over Rahul Gandhi`s remarks in the United Kingdom on Indian democracy and Parliament. Union ministers Rajnath Singh and Piyush Goyal led the government`s offensive against Rahul Gandhi in Parliament. They demanded Gandhi`s apology even as the opposition planned to protest over rising prices and push for a joint parliamentary committee to investigate the Adani-Hindenburg issue. Both Houses, lower House, the Lok Sabha, and, Upper House, the Rajya Sabha, were adjourned for the day amid protests from both sides as the Budget session resumed.
