Indian Prez inaugurates Gandhi statue in Switzerland |
Indian President Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday unveiled the bust of Mahatma Gandhi, marking the 150th anniversary of the Father of the Nation and hoped that his legacy will inspire mankind to tackle climate change and conserve ecology. The statue in Villeneuve on the shores of Lake Geneva, was a gift from the Government of India and commissioned by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations. Ram Nath Kovind, in a special event organised in Villeneuve, Switzerland, thanked the commune of Villeneuve for celebrating Gandhi`s legacy and naming a Square after him. Talking about Mahatma Gandhi, President Kovind said, "He built his first hermitage in India on the banks of River Sabarmati. Today, we have brought him to the banks of Lake Geneva. You have given him a special place, close to nature and close to your hearts. It is a fitting tribute to a man who loved nature and cared so much for it." After concluding his tour of Switzerland, President Kovind arrived in the Slovenian capital on Sunday night on the last leg of his 3 nation tour. He held talks with his Slovenian counterpart Borut Pahor in the capital Ljubljana on Monday.
