Indian is World Bank chief economist |
The World Bank has appointed Indermit Gill, an Indian national, chief economist, and senior vice-president for development economics at the multilateral development bank. The Bank President, David Malpass, said Gill brings a combination of leadership, invaluable expertise, and practical experience working with country governments on macroeconomic imbalances, growth, poverty, institutions, conflict, and climate change. Gill`s appointment will be effective September 1, 2022. Gill will be the second Indian to serve as chief economist at the World Bank. Kaushik Basu was the first, having served from 2012 to 2016. Raghuram Rajan and Gita Gopinath have served as chief economists at the International Monetary Fund, the sister organization of the World Bank.
