Indian legend Mankad in ICC Cricket Hall of Fame |
Celebrated former Indian cricketer Vinoo Mankad has been inducted by the International Cricket Council in its Special Edition of ICC Hall of Fame that has the world`s 10 cricket icons in it. The special edition celebrates the prestigious history of Test cricket and coincides with this month`s maiden World Test Championship final between India and New Zealand to be held from 18th June. The ICC said "The 10 legends of the game to be inducted have all made a significant contribution to the history of Test cricket, and join an illustrious list of ICC Hall of Famers, taking the total number to 103 as a result of this intake”. The 10 cricketers included played in 5 different eras of the game. These stalwarts are: Aubrey Faulkner of South Africa and Monty Noble of Australia (Early Cricket Era, prior to 1918); Sir Learie Constantine of West Indies and Stan McCabe of Australia (Inter-War Era, 1918-1945); Ted Dexter of England and Vinoo Mankad of India (Post-War Era, 1946-1970); Desmond Haynes of West Indies and Bob Willis of England (ODI Era, 1971-1995); and Andy Flower of Zimbabwe and Kumar Sangakkara of Sri Lanka (Modern Cricket Era, 1996-2015). The ICC further recalled Mankad`s numerous contributions to Test cricket and applauded his achievements. It added, "Vinoo Mankad of India played 44 Tests, scored 2,109 runs at 31.47, took 162 wickets at 32.32, and was an opening batsman and slow left-arm orthodox bowler, known as one of India`s greatest-ever all-rounders.”Mankad also coached former India captain Sunil Gavaskar, who holds Mankad in high esteem, and says that he learned the greatest cricketing lesson from him”.
