Interim budget expectations |
The budget session of the parliament begins on Jan 31 and interim budget is likely to be presented on Feb 1. As the elections are due within ninety days, the focus of vote of accounts will be on spending for the whole year. It is the last budget of the government, so focus will be policy guidelines and vision for the future. No new taxes can be levied. But focus will be on agrarian crisis and roadmap to address that ,apart from this it will be on job creation and fresh drivers for growth. Higher social sector spending and a focus on lifting rural incomes are likely to dominate the February budget. The government has already set in motion a plan to double farmers` incomes by 2022. There could be more on that in the budget given that the electoral setback for BJP is being largely attributed to rural distress and farmer anger.
