Jammu & Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill introduced in Parliament |
The Union Home Ministry on Monday introduced the much hyped and controversial Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill 2019 to replace an ordinance issued by the previous Modi government. By adding the words "international borders" in the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation Act, 2004, the bill seeks to provide benefits of 3% reservation to the persons living in areas adjoining International Border at par with persons living in areas adjoining Actual Line of Control in recruitment, promotions and admission in different professional courses to various categories of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, socially and educationally backward classes. Till now, this reservation was not available to persons residing in the areas adjoining International Border. The amendment will benefit over 36 lakh residents from Jammu and Kashmir from a slew of measures on reservation, promotions and admissions. The major beneficiary will be from SC/ST while those from economically weaker section constitute 12.50 lakh of the population in Jammu and Kashmir, as per the 2011 population census.
