Labour laws to be simplified |
The Narendra Modi government will soon be making its first move to reform labour laws and is all set to introduce a new legislation in Parliament that will club 44 labour laws into four codes on wages, social security, industrial safety and welfare, and industrial relations. The decision to expedite work on labour laws was taken at a meeting headed by home minister Amit Shah. It was attended by finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, commerce and industry and railways minister Piyush Goyal and labour minister Santosh Gangwar. A new labour bill is expected to be introduced in the coming session of the Parliament. In line with recommendations of the second national commission on labour, the labour ministry last year had taken steps for formulating four labour codes on wages, industrial relations, social security and welfare; occupational safety, health and working conditions by simplifying, and rationalising the relevant provisions of the existing central labour laws. Labour Minister Santosh Gangwar said the draft will be moved to the Cabinet for approval and then introduced in the Lok Sabha in the second week of the Parliament session starting June 17. The government has consulted all major labour unions in the country on the new labour code.
